Specials

This year we have special classes on a rotation instead of a certain day every week. Our rotation is:

Day One and Five – Art

Day Two, Four, Six and Eight - PE /Music

Day Three and Seven – Computer Lab/Library

If we have a day off school we never skip a special, we just continue with the rotation.

Computer Lab
Library

Students will explore many educational sites with our computer teacher, Mrs. Joan Hays.  They will learn to log in to the computer and navigate the computer website at South Newton.  The computer lab page can be found at our school website.

Mrs. Wilson, our librarian, will help students learn to browse the library to check out reading material in both the fiction and non-fiction sections of our library.

Music

Our new music teacher is Mrs. Bridgeman.  She has joined our staff after teaching at Rensselaer. Students will learn about different instruments, practice singing familiar songs and perform for families at an annual concert.

Students will receive music and PE on the same day for 30 minutes each and on even days of our 8 day rotation (Day 2, 4, 6, and 8).

P.E.

The students will practice gross motor skills and how to play games together with good sportsmanship in PE with Mr. Sloan.  Students are asked to bring a pair of tennis shoes that are clean and have non marking soles.  We do have gently used PE shoes at school.

Often first graders will outgrow their gym shoes before the end of the year.  We will check periodically and alert you if your child needs bigger gym shoes

Art

Ms. Lackner is our art teacher.  Students will work with many different types of media including crayon, chalk, paint and clay. She always welcomes empty egg cartons for paint pallettes. She asks that each child bring an old oversized paintshirt to school to protect their clothing on art days. Students have art for a 60 minute period on day 1 and 5 of our 8 day rotation.
